Taxis and private hire vehiclesThere are two kinds of transport that we commonly know as ‘taxis’. One is the Hackney Carriage, and these are the vehicles which you can hail in the street. The others are private hire vehicles that you must pre-book. Recent Disability Discrimination Acts have created regulations that will require all hackney carriages in certain areas to be wheelchair accessible. There is in place a timetable for that to happen and more details can found by following the link on this page. Similar regulations may be drawn up in due course for private hire vehicles. Bath & North East Somerset have a Fare Car shared-taxi scheme which is a safe and friendly shared taxi service at special rates, now expanding in local rural areas. Bristol has a Taxis Sharing Scheme for residents of Barton Hill, St Philip's and St Anne's, offering members 50p per journey. Search for taxi firms by clicking on the local authorities above. Not all taxis firms listed on this website are guaranteed to have vehicles with wheel chair access so please check beforehand.
