The Bristol Ferry Boat Company operates ferries in the floating harbour in Bristol. There are two commuter routes from Hotwells and Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station to the City centre. They also run pleasure cruises within the floating harbour and the River Avon.
Currently only four of their landing stages are wheelchair accessible. They are the stops at Castle Park, the City Centre, by the Cottage Public House just off Cumberland Road and Mardyke Wharf at Hotwells Road.
They have six boats one of which, the Brigantia, is wheelchair accessible by means of a wheelchair lift. The Brigantia is regularly used on the commuter routes, and can be used on any pre-booked trip by request.
As a ferry operator their vessels are not covered by the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Acts. They are however required to comply with a Code of Practice.
The Bristol Packet offers public and charter boat trips on the River Avon to Conham, Hanham and Bath, also down the Avon Gorge to the Bristol Channel and around Bristol's Floating Harbour. A full commentary is given on all public trips and refreshments available. Toilet facilities and weather protection are provided.
Balmoral has a disabled toilet facility on the main deck. The gangways leading onto the ship are ridged and therefore wheelchair passengers may have to be lifted onto the ship.
The crew are happy to assist wheelchair & less-agile passengers to negotiate the different areas of the vessels. There are only relatively steep stairs leading between the different decks but their crew can help negotiate these areas - and have been doing so for many years. Please ask for any help you may require.
Due to weight restrictions on board the ship, they can generally only carry five wheelchairs at any one time. Call in advance if there are any queries.
