Buses

Local bus services

Local bus services have become more accessible for people with reduced mobility following the introduction of low floor vehicles. These buses are designed in such a way that the height of the entrance from the pavement is greatly reduced.

Not all low floor buses are wheelchair accessible but new designs of entrance mean that some are. Low steps, flat floors, extra grab rails and special colour contrast mean that for anyone whose mobility is restricted but not enough to use a wheelchair the bus is much easier to use.

Be aware that not every vehicle used for an advertised ‘accessible’ service will necessarily be accessible in the event; you are encouraged to inform the bus company and the Local Authority if this occurs.

Easyrider scheme

In addition, there are guaranteed accessible bus services operated in Bristol under the Easyrider scheme, and in Bath bus route 42 serving localities between Odd Down Park & Ride and Bath Royal United Hospital.

Coaches

Coaches, which in the main are used on longer journeys, are not yet nearly as accessible as buses but coach manufacturers are now building vehicles that conform to new regulations and the operators are starting to add them to their fleets.

National Express, the main operators of long distance coach routes, have already started to add new vehicles with lifts to their fleet. The lifts are designed to replace the front passenger entrance and will enable access for wheelchair users as well as for other disabled and older people who find climbing the steps difficult or impossible.

Concessionary Fare Scheme - Diamond Travelcard

If you are 60 years old or have a qualifying disability, you may be entitled to free concessionary bus travel. Within the former Avon area you should apply to your council for a Diamond Travelcard. It will enable you to travel free on all buses in Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire after 09:00 on weekdays and all day on the weekend and Bank Holidays. The Diamond Travelcard can also be used on all journeys that go outside the area providing they are direct services, for example: A resident of Yate could travel to Bristol and then travel onwards to Clarkes Village at Street, Somerset as there is a direct service from Bristol to Street.

From 1 April 2008, the free bus travel scheme will be extended and become a national concessionary pass and holders will be able to travel free on any bus in England from 09:30 to 23:00 Monday to Friday and anytime Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holidays. (Not including National Express or like services).
