Traveline - for information and timetables of all local bus, coach and rail services Telephone: 0871 200 22 33 (BT callers charged 10p per minute plus 6p set-up fee per call. Mobile and other providers' charges vary) BusesLocal bus servicesLocal bus services have become more accessible for people with reduced mobility following the introduction of low floor vehicles. These buses are designed in such a way that the height of the entrance from the pavement is greatly reduced. Not all low floor buses are wheelchair accessible but new designs of entrance mean that some are. Low steps, flat floors, extra grab rails and special colour contrast mean that for anyone whose mobility is restricted but not enough to use a wheelchair the bus is much easier to use. Be aware that not every vehicle used for an advertised ‘accessible’ service will necessarily be accessible in the event; you are encouraged to inform the bus company and the Local Authority if this occurs. Easyrider schemeIn addition, there are guaranteed accessible bus services operated in Bristol under the Easyrider scheme, and in Bath bus route 42 serving localities between Odd Down Park & Ride and Bath Royal United Hospital. CoachesCoaches, which in the main are used on longer journeys, are not yet nearly as accessible as buses but coach manufacturers are now building vehicles that conform to new regulations and the operators are starting to add them to their fleets. National Express, the main operators of long distance coach routes, have already started to add new vehicles with lifts to their fleet. The lifts are designed to replace the front passenger entrance and will enable access for wheelchair users as well as for other disabled and older people who find climbing the steps difficult or impossible. Concessionary Fare Scheme - All England TravelcardIf you are over 60 years old or disabled you can apply for a new All England Travelcard that will entitle you to free, off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England.
